PULSE
from life and work of Sylvia Plath
“Sylvia Plath appears to us, in a way, like a beast in a cage. A beast divided between her duties as a mom and a wife and her deep passion for literature. It is as if we participate in a flow of the character’s consciousness: there is no narrative itself, precisely because the events in the play are all connected and influenced by each other, with the incessant changing of emotions that the character passes through.”

PULSE is a monologue created from life and work of American Poetry icon, Sylvia Plath. The play was built from questions asked by the director Vanessa Bruno to actress Elisa Volpatto, who answered in a physical way. Through Sylvia Plath’s history the play questions the roles that women played back in the 50’s, establishing a parallel with the present days.
The playwriting was organized based on biographies the "The Silent Woman," by Janet Malcolm and "American Isis – The Life and Art of Sylvia Plath," by Carl Rollyson, and also on "The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath", organized by Karen V. Kukil as well as her most important poem’s book, "Ariel”. The rehearsals where supported by the “Klauss Vianna Technique” (TKV), a work conducted by the Movement Director Livia Vilela.
The monologue presents itself in a very intimate climate on what would be the last day of Sylvia Plath’s life. The character experiences daydreams, memories and nightmares to reconstruct important moments of her life.
PULSE debuted in May 2016 at SESC Consolação, in São Paulo, along with another monologue from VULCÃO, THE PAIN. In August of the same year, still in São Paulo, it performed at Viga Espaço Cênico and in September of the same year it occupied the historical Eugênio Kusnet Arena Theater. Still in 2016, the show ran in Porto Alegre, at Usina do Gasômetro. In 2017 performed again in São Paulo, at Teatro Cemitério de Automóveis and in 2018 at Zona Franca, also in São Paulo. In January 2019 the monologue was performed at Teatro Poeira, in Rio de Janeiro.
