PULSE

from life and work of Sylvia Plath

  • Pulso - página

“Sylvia Plath appears to us, in a way, like a beast in a cage. A beast divided between her duties as a mom and a wife and her deep passion for literature. It is as if we participate in a flow of the character’s consciousness: there is no narrative itself, precisely because the events in the play are all connected and influenced by each other, with the incessant changing of emotions that the character passes through.”

Antônio Hohleldt | journalist, writer and professor

Jornal do Comércio | December | 2016

The monologue is inspired by the life and work of American poetry icon Sylvia Plath (1932-1963). Is presents the universe of a woman who is enclosed in the domestic environment - the same place where many other women were placed in her time and are still today. The character recalls moments of her past, the unhealthy passion for her husband (the writer Ted Hughes) and seeks to write at the same time she sees herself without acknowledgment, precisely because of her position in a patriarchal society. Sylvia found almost no space to publish her work during life, becoming known mainly after her death (she committed suicide at the age of 30, turning on the gas in her kitchen). The monologue shows us what would have been her last day, immersed in memories and questions about her life as a woman writer in the 50’s.

The playwriting was organized based on biographies "The Silent Woman," by Janet Malcolm and "American Isis – The Life and Art of Sylvia Plath," by Carl Rollyson, and also on "The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath", organized by Karen V. Kukil as well as her most important poem’s book, "Ariel”. The rehearsals where supported by the “Klauss Vianna Technique” (TKV), a work conducted by Movement Director Livia Vilela.
